04 — Heat pump technology

Izenn

One cycle. Cooling and heating.

A heat pump does not burn fuel to make heat; it moves heat that already exists. A refrigerant circulates through four components. Reverse the flow, and cooling becomes heating.

Heat is taken from the room and released outdoors.Heat is taken from the outdoor air and released into the room.

Compressor

Raises the pressure and temperature of the refrigerant gas.

Condenser

The hot gas gives off its heat and condenses into a liquid.

Expansion valve

Drops the pressure, so the refrigerant turns very cold.

Evaporator

The cold refrigerant absorbs heat and evaporates.
05

Four-way valve

Reverses the flow, so the two coils swap roles.
